The Best Places to Live in Portugal in 2026

The Best Places to Live in Portugal in 2026

There is no single best place to live in Portugal, only the best place for how you actually live. Here are the regions worth shortlisting in 2026, who each one suits, and a rough sense of rents.

Lisbon and Cascais

The capital and its coastal neighbour offer the most English, the biggest expat community, and the easiest access to specialists and international services. The trade-off is price: a one-bed runs roughly €900 to €1,300, and a comfortable single budget is €1,800 to €2,500.

Porto and the north

Smaller, cheaper and more characterful than Lisbon, with a cooler, wetter climate. One-beds run roughly €800 to €1,100, with strong healthcare and transport. Good for city life on a budget.

The Silver Coast

The stretch between Lisbon and Porto, including Caldas da Rainha, Óbidos and Nazaré. The most-scouted value option: coastal, calmer, and far cheaper than Lisbon (often €600 to €900 for a one-bed) while still within reach of a major hospital.

The Algarve

The warmest, sunniest region and a long-time favourite for retirees, with a large English-speaking community in the west and centre. Rents swing with the season. Trade-offs are summer tourism and a stronger expat-versus-local divide.

Coimbra and the interior

University-town culture and rural Portugal at the lowest prices in the country, often €350 to €650 for a one-bed. Best for those who want authenticity and value and do not mind needing a car and some Portuguese.

How to choose

  • Need walkable life and specialists nearby: choose a city or a coastal town
  • Top priority is climate: weight toward the Algarve
  • Want the best value within reach of a hospital: look at the Silver Coast
  • Want authenticity and the lowest costs: consider the interior
