Rent for a central one-bedroom
Utilities: electricity, water and gas
Home internet and a mobile plan
Groceries
Transport, a pass or modest fuel
Private health insurance
Eating out and some leisure
What it does not include
These are everyday living costs. Budget separately for one-off items: flights, your rental deposit, furniture, visa and document fees, and trips home. People often forget these and feel the pinch in month one.
What about a couple?
A couple is not double a single person, because rent and many bills are shared. As a guide for 2026, a couple runs roughly 1,850 euros a month on the Silver Coast, up to about 2,650 in Lisbon.
Is Portugal cheaper than the UK or US?
For most people, yes, especially on rent outside Lisbon, eating out and healthcare. Lisbon and the prime Algarve have caught up and are no longer bargain territory, so where you choose matters as much as the country.
